Where you will find R-407A

R-407A is an all-HFC blend used in supermarket refrigeration, commercial coolers and freezers, and cold storage (Orbia Klea 407A). It was used both in new equipment and to retrofit R-22, and as a lower-GWP option to R-404A and R-507A. Orbia (formerly Koura and Mexichem) sells it as Klea 407A, once Klea 60; Honeywell sold Genetron 407A.

It is often confused with R-407C, the air-conditioning blend. Both use R-32, R-125 and R-134a, but in different proportions (R-407A 20/40/40, R-407C 23/25/52 by mass), so their PT charts differ. Read the nameplate and any retrofit tag; a supermarket rack converted from R-22 or R-404A may carry the original refrigerant on the compressor labels.

Charging R-407A

R-407A is zeotropic, with about 10.0°F of glide at 40°F evaporating and 7.9°F at 100°F condensing in the computed data. Charge it as liquid, the rule for zeotropic blends; vapor drawn from the cylinder has a different composition from the liquid. No R-407A-specific charging statement from a manufacturer was found for this page, so follow the equipment or retrofit instructions for metering rate and final charge.

At 40°F the bubble pressure is 85.6 psig and the dew pressure 69.4 psig. Use the dew column with suction pressure for superheat and the bubble column with liquid-line pressure for subcooling. The glide calculator gives the spread at the pressure on your gauge, and the PT chart guide explains bubble and dew.

On TXV and EEV systems, charge to the manufacturer’s subcooling or charging instructions and check with the subcooling calculator. Capillary-tube self-contained units are charged by weight to the nameplate. The CEC-based target superheat calculator covers fixed-metering comfort air conditioners only.

This chart was spot-checked against the Chemours pressure-temperature guide, with differences of 0.05 psi or less.

Oil and compatibility

R-407A uses POE oil (Honeywell); Copeland’s approved-lubricant bulletin (AE 93-11) lists POE-32 for R-407A compressors. Follow the compressor label for grade.

Because the listed lubricant is POE, converting an R-22 system that runs mineral oil means an oil change; how much residual mineral oil is acceptable comes from the refrigerant maker’s retrofit guideline. Converting R-407A systems on to R-449A or R-448A keeps POE. See the oil types guide.

Safety, handling and recovery

R-407A is class A1: lower toxicity and no flame propagation. Standard tools apply, and the recovery machine should be certified to Appendix B3 (AHRI 740).

R-407A is one of the refrigerants that 40 CFR 82.152 names as an example of a high-pressure appliance refrigerant. Section 608 Type II or Universal certification is required, and sales are restricted to certified technicians. Required recovery levels for equipment made after November 15, 1993 (40 CFR 82.156): 0 in Hg under 200 lb, 10 in Hg at 200 lb or more.

Since January 1, 2026, appliances with 15 lb or more of HFC are covered by the leak repair rules in 40 CFR 84.106; commercial refrigeration systems of 1,500 lb or more need automatic leak detection (84.108).

The legacy label color for R-407A is lime green. New containers since January 1, 2020 are light green-gray (RAL 7044) under AHRI Guideline N-2017, so the label is what identifies the gas. See cylinder colors.

Status and replacements

Servicing existing R-407A systems is legal. Supply falls with the AIM Act allowance cuts (40 CFR 84.7): 60% of baseline in 2024–2028 and 30% from 2029.

In new equipment, R-407A’s GWP of 2,107 is above the limits in the May 2026 final rule (91 FR 31284): 1,400 for new remote condensing units from July 27, 2026 and new supermarket systems from January 1, 2027, and 700 for new cold storage from July 27, 2026, with lower 150/300 limits from January 1, 2032. 40 CFR 84.54 also names R-407A as restricted in new large ice machines and refrigerated food processing and dispensing equipment over 500 g from January 1, 2027. EPA SNAP had already listed it as unacceptable in new cold storage warehouses from January 1, 2023.

From January 1, 2029, servicing supermarket systems, refrigerated transport and automatic commercial ice makers requires reclaimed refrigerant (40 CFR 84.112(e)).

The usual retrofit path for R-407A systems is R-449A or R-448A, both A1 POE blends with GWP just under 1,400. New systems are moving to the A2L blends R-454A, R-454C and R-455A, or to CO2. See the R-404A replacement comparison for the full list.

Common questions

What is the difference between R-407A and R-407C?

Same three components, different mix: R-407A is 20% R-32, 40% R-125 and 40% R-134a; R-407C is 23/25/52. R-407A is the refrigeration blend (GWP 2,107), R-407C the air-conditioning and R-22 retrofit blend (GWP 1,774). Their PT charts are not interchangeable.

What is the difference between R-407A and R-407F?

R-407F uses the same components at 30/30/40, with more R-32 and less R-125. It has a lower GWP (1,825) and slightly higher pressures; at a 40°F dew point the computed charts give 73.4 psig for R-407F against 69.4 psig for R-407A.

How this chart was computed

Every pressure on this page is calculated, not copied: CoolProp 8.0.0 (HEOS backend), the open-source implementation of the reference equations of state, using the model mix:R407A at the nominal ASHRAE 34 composition. Gauge values assume sea-level air pressure (14.696 psia); kPa values in the CSV are absolute.
